Nuno Santo wants to sign 'powerful' £21m star, and Wolves simply cannot let it happen - opinion

Wolves have made a slow start to the summer in terms of incoming players, and now, Nuno Espirito Santo is targeting a player who could be perfect for Vitor Pereira.

Wolves have signed Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo, but have lost Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Pablo Sarabia – with more to follow out of the club.

Nelson Semedo is unlikely to stay at Wolves, despite a four-year contract offer sitting on the table.

And fringe players such as Goncalo Guedes, Hwang Hee-chan, Sam Johnstone and Tommy Doyle could all leave Wolves.

So Wolves could do with getting a move on, with pre-season to start in a couple of weeks.

Earlier this week, there was some big news in the football world that Lyon have been relegated to Ligue 2 following financial problems.

As a result of this, several of their players are now expected to leave, with Georges Mikautadze probably one of the most likely exits.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Nottingham Forest have now joined the hunt for Georges Mikautadze.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

The Georgia international scored 17 goals in 47 appearances for Lyon in 2024/25, in what was only his first season with the club.

The club’s relegation now casts major doubt on his future.

He is simply too good to be playing in the French second tier, and inevitably, there are now reports of interest from other clubs.

Forest – managed by former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo of course – want to sign Mikautadze, who is valued at just over £21 million.

And there is further interest from Eintracht Frankfurt and AS Roma.

Simply put, Wolves – who are not mentioned in the report – cannot stand by and let Nuno swoop for Mikautadze.

This is a player with huge quality, and someone Wolves have actually been linked with several times before.

There’s a golden opportunity here to snag someone who can come in and make an impact now. He is not a prospect, he is good to go – and Wolves need cover and competition for Jorgen Strand Larsen.

But Mikautadze – who possesses a ‘powerful strike despite not having a particularly big back-swing’ (via Coaches Voice) – can also play just off the main striker, and we know that Wolves are also looking for another number 10 after Lopez.

On the face of it, there are hardly any reasons why Wolves should not be getting involved here.

Wolves just lost a huge amount of firepower with Cunha joining United.

Mikautadze is a goalscorer – and he’s also proven himself at international level. He finished as the joint-top scorer at Euro 2024, and has 20 goals in 37 appearances for Georgia.

Mikautadze is such a golden opportunity for Wolves, and the newly restructured recruitment division should at least put out the feelers.

To make no attempt at all for a player with so much to offer, and someone who is almost certain to leave his club, would just be baffling.
