Jurgen Klopp made Dominic Calvert-Lewin feelings clear as Everton star announces shock exit

Everton is losing “one of the best strikers in England” according to Jurgen Klopp, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin announcing his departure from Liverpool’s neighbor.

The former Reds boss was clearly a big admirer of the forward, who has now brought an end to his nine-year association with the Toffees, having confirmed he will leave Merseyside when his contract expires at the end of this month.

“After nine remarkable years at this club, I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision - together with my family - to begin a new chapter in my career,” Calvert-Lewin wrote in a statement. “This isn’t something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old.

“It’s the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow, and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man.

“I want to express my gratitude to all the managers and coaches I’ve worked with over the years, and to my teammates who have become lifelong friends.”

Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United back in 2016, and would go on to become a full England international as his reputation grew over the years at Goodison Park.

Injuries would be a constant blight in recent years for the 28-year-old though, and he would only manage to make more than 30 appearances in a season once during his final four years with Everton.

Nevertheless, his efforts were certainly recognized across Stanley Park, with Klopp expressing his admiration for Calvert-Lewin before a Merseyside derby back in 2022.

“If you cannot use Calvert-Lewin for almost a whole season, it’s a massive blow. He’s one of the best strikers in England, for sure,” Klopp said.

Calvert-Lewin would only score twice for Everton in 14 appearances against Liverpool, although both of his goals would have a significant impact.

His first came in a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park in October 2020 as he struck with less than 10 minutes remaining to earn his side a point in a game that Liverpool fans will remember for Jordan Pickford’s horrendous challenge on Virgil van Dijk, which kept the Dutch defender out for the remainder of the season.

His only other goal came in Klopp’s final Merseyside derby last year, with Calvert-Lewin striking after the break to make it 2-0 and end Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League title, and lead the Reds boss to apologize for his side’s performance.

“I really feel for the people,’ Klopp admitted after his final outing at Goodison Park. “We never lost here (under Klopp) and it feels really different. I really apologize for that.”
