Less than one month remains until the Chicago Bears report to training camp in what is expected to be the most anticipated season in recent memory for the franchise. After an offseason of changes and adding talent to the roster, left tackle will be one of the most-watched positions throughout training camp.
While most of the starters on the offensive line are in place, left tackle is a major uncertainty. Since becoming general manager in 2022, Ryan Poles has drafted at least one player at the position in three of the last four NFL Drafts. While Braxton Jones was the unquestioned starter for three seasons from 2022-24, the Bears added Ozzy Trapilo with the 56th overall pick in the 2025 draft.
Between Jones and Trapilo is the 72nd overall pick from the 2024 draft, third-rounder Kiran Amegadjie. Coming out of college, Amegadjie was labeled as a high-upside option, with his long arms and athleticism being his true calling cards.
While he appeared in six games as a rookie and had just one start, it's important to keep in mind that Amegadjie was a mid-round rookie and that he missed most of training camp last season due to an injury sustained in college. The lack of time and live reps with his teammates ultimately hindered his ability to further his development last season.
Now, heading into his second season, Amegadjie finds himself in a three-way race to potentially be the starter at left tackle. Jones is coming off a season-ending injury, while Trapilo is a rookie who has a lot to prove. In short, when the Bears report to training camp, there's a real chance that Amegadjie ends up competing for the starting spot at left tackle. For him, winning the starting job is the best-case scenario. If he looses it, the plus side for him is that he can play both left tackle and left guard, so positional versatility still gives the new coaching staff a few different options with him.
With year two officially here for Amegadjie, let's get into whether or not he'll take a jump forward during his sophomore season.
