After Leeds United call, striker confirms he has left rival Premier League club on a free transfer

Leeds United’s search for a new starting striker goes on with The Whites adding Lukas Nmecha to the list, but making it abundantly clear that they still want a starting option.

Out of the blue, Germany international Nmecha signed a two-year deal with the club. He agreed a deal that would become active from July 1, when his Wolfsburg contract ends on June 30 – so, on Tuesday.

With Nmecha now on board, Leeds have four strikers. Joel Piroe remains the club’s first-choice option while Patrick Bamford, Mateo Joseph and Nmecha are cover. But Leeds still want a starting forward.

Plenty of players have been linked. Everton striker Beto came first before a £32m bid was lodged to sign Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz. Italian media strongly suggest Leeds have agreed a deal for Nikola Krstovic.

But those with connections close to the club on these shores state that a move for Krstovic is nonsense. Another striker linked with the club has taken to Instagram on Sunday to confirm he is now a free agent.

Dom Calvert-Lewin confirms he is a free agent on Instagram

Dom Calvert-Lewin has confirmed that he is no longer an Everton player, with the 28-year-old confirming he is now a free agent and ending a nine-year stint on Merseyside. He will be looking for a new challenge.

The England international has endured some dismal spells with injury of late and has been unable to match the form he showed during Carlo Ancelotti’s stint. But clubs are certainly looking at Calvert-Lewin.

He posted a touching message on Instagram, with plenty of nice words aimed at Angus Kinnear’s new side Everton. He also briefly touched on what will come next, and the “new challenge” he is excited by.

“This choice to move on was simply not about me. It was a decision my family and I spent a long time considering together. We believe it is the right time to seek a new challenge and continue growing.”

The situation regarding a possible Leeds move for Calvert-Lewin

In December 2024, Leeds icon and former Everton striker Jermaine Beckford urged Calvert-Lewin to find himself a new club, simply to give him a fresh start and try something new with his career stagnating.

Now, he has done that. It comes after Leeds made a secret phone call to enquire about Calvert-Lewin this summer. But Leeds fans will have their reservations over a deal to land the England striker this summer.

Nmecha’s injury history has limited him to just over 80 appearances in four seasons at Wolfsburg and of course, Bamford is no stranger to the treatment table. Do Leeds really need another version of Bamford?
