Harvey Elliott's Liverpool future is up in the air as the England hero looks back on a glorious summer for club and country.

The attacking midfielder was part of Arne Slot's side crowned Premier League champions in late April, with a 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham at Anfield securing a record-equalling 20th top flight title. And the 22-year-old sported a winners' medal around his neck the following month, before becoming emotional in the celebrations after a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace when he seemingly waved farewell to the Kop.

He went on to dazzle for England Under-21s at the European Championship in Slovakia, netting five goals in total for Lee Carsley's team en route to glory. Saturday night's thrilling 3-2 triumph over Germany in Bratislava saw the Reds' young gun kick-start the scoring before being honoured with the Player of the Tournament award post-match.

Elliott now rubs shoulders with football greats like Luis Figo, Juan Mata and Fabio Cannavaro, all previous recipients of the award. Despite being one of the youngest in Liverpool's ranks, he's a leading figure at Under-21 level, reports the Liverpool Echo - but not at club level.

Reflecting on his match-winning brace that knocked out the Netherlands in the semi-final earlier this week, Elliott said: "You can speak as much as you want on the pitch, you can say whatever, but at the end of the day when the moment comes and you need to show up, and you need to, for example, in my situation, score a goal."

The former Fulham youngster, who only celebrated his 22nd birthday in April, has already racked up nearly 150 appearances for the Premier League titans, despite a five-month layoff due to a broken ankle and a season-long loan stint at Blackburn Rovers.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Elliott rose through the ranks to become one of the manager's go-to substitutes, while also performing admirably from the start of games whether in high-stakes league matches against Manchester City or cup finals at Wembley, or in rotated line-ups for Carabao Cup or Europa League fixtures.

Elliott made a total of 53 appearances for Klopp in his final season at Liverpool, missing only four Premier League games. However, his situation has drastically changed under Arne Slot, who hasn't been able to provide him with comparable playing time.

Only Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa made fewer appearances, with Elliott racking up 1352 minutes in the 23/24 season but only 371 this time around.

A foot fracture sustained during an England match in September didn't help his cause, as a nearly three-month absence gave other midfielders like Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, and Alexis Mac Allister the opportunity to win Slot's confidence by the time Elliott returned in late November, putting him at a significant disadvantage.

The fact that Elliott didn't start a single Premier League game before Liverpool secured the championship on April 27 indicates his issues, despite his resolve when speaking to the Echo in April, when he said: "This is the club I want to be at. I hope that I can push on [next season]. This is my team, I am committed to them and it's just a situation that is always going to have a lot of talk, I just need to think about what is best for my future, my career and as much as I want it to be here.

"You never know what is going to happen around the corner. If I had it my way, that would be here, I would play each and every game here and stay here for the rest of my career but it all depends on managers, the people above and as I said you don't know what could happen but as far as I am aware I am here, here to stay and this is the club I want to be at."

However, after witnessing the club sealing a record-breaking deal for German international Florian Wirtz at £116m, it wouldn't be surprising if Elliott had a change of heart. Speaking earlier this month, he said: "I'm coming to an age now where I'm 22 and I don't really want to be wasting years of my career, because it's a short career."

Former Liverpool defender Conor Coady, speaking on Channel 4's coverage on Saturday night, observed: "It's massively important now the next steps he takes in his career. We've all said the same, haven't we?

"Whatever he does now, it's so important - whether that be at Liverpool or elsewhere - that he goes and plays now because he's at that level now and he has shown to all of the supporters that he is ready for that next step."

Brighton and RB Leipzig are among the clubs rumoured to be interested, while Borussia Dortmund have also been mentioned in the past. If it becomes apparent that Elliott's days at Merseyside are numbered, there'll be no shortage of clubs vying for his signature.
