Harvey Elliott has reaffirmed his position as an elite Premier League talent following his displays at this summer’s Under-21 European Championships.
The Liverpool midfielder netted five goals in six matches, including four across the three knockout games, and was named Player of the Tournament in Slovakia. Obviously, that leads to the inevitable questions of what comes next for precocious talent at club level.
Elliott started as many games for England’s underage team this summer as he did during the entirety of the 2024/25 season for Liverpool. Of his six starts under Arne Slot, only two were in the Premier League, and both of those came after the Reds had secured the Premier League title.
The post-Jurgen Klopp era has proven difficult for the 22-year-old, who suffered from a broken foot that derailed the first half of his season, and then struggled to find a starting spot with Slot tending to choose three of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones in the middle.
But there were times Elliott didn’t help himself, and he failed to impress when handed starting spots this season. Slot even admitted he had to have an “honest” conversation with the ex-Fulham man after he returned from his foot injury in December.
“I think first of all it’s very important that players who are here with us would like to stay; that’s a big compliment to everyone working here,” the Liverpool head coach said last month when asked about Elliott’s future.

“Harvey is one of the players who hasn’t had as much playing time as he maybe deserves, but like some others he’s in competition with so many good players that mainly I’ve chosen.
“Also partly because he was injured for a long time and I’ve been honest with him, the first part after he came back from his injury he wasn’t the same as he was before his injury. But the last few months he’s back to his old level again.
“There was no need for me to start with different players, but I think if you look at the amount of minutes that he had in the last one or two months and the time before, you can see it goes up already.

“So that tells you that we like, I like, him more now than I did the first months when he came back from his injury.”
Elliott started the Premier League wins over Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion, scoring and providing an assist in the latter, and was in tears after the final game of the season at home to Crystal Palace.
The midfielder has admitted he may need to move on this summer for the sake of his career. The Seagulls are among those sides interested in signing Elliott this summer, while West Ham United, Fulham, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have also been linked with a move.
