The San Francisco 49ers have developed a reputation for being savants in the NFL Draft. General manager John Lynch is known for his talent evaluation, and head coach Kyle Shanahan can get the most out of his players.
However, the team also has a knack for acquiring great veterans from outside the building. Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey are the obvious two that come to mind, as the 49ers traded for both of these players to help them get over the hump and win a Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, the team fell short on both occasions against the powerhouse Kansas City Chiefs. This has left the 49ers' fan base with a bit of animosity toward the AFC West franchise, and most would agree that seeing the Kelce brothers everywhere both stings a bit and is incredibly annoying.
Jason Kelce sees Trent Williams in Chiefs' first-round pick
-----------------------------------------------------------
On Wednesday, the Kelce brothers hosted Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith on a [recent episode](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdRxzxNuEWM) of their "New Heights" podcast. Jason Kelce took the time to make an absurd comparison for Kansas City's first-round pick in this year's draft, offensive tackle Josh Simmons.
"I’ve watched a lot of these linemen coming out the last few years," Kelce said. "This kid, I mean, he is the closest thing I’ve seen to like a Trent Williams– like that next level strength and athleticism. The only reason he fell to you guys is because of that (patellar tendon) injury."
To compare any rookie to Trent Williams is a bit ridiculous, as the 49ers star has 11 Pro Bowls and four All-Pro honors to his name. If not for an injury-shortened season in 2024, he might have completed four straight seasons as a member of the All-Pro First-Team.

Simmons, by contrast, was not even considered the best offensive tackle in his class. While it is true that he may have fallen a bit because of a knee injury, he was still the fifth tackle taken in the 2025 NFL Draft and the eighth offensive lineman.
While the two players are certainly of a similar build, it is a bit reckless to compare a player who has never played an NFL game to a player who was still a top-five tackle in his 14th NFL season. Simmons has a long way to go and a lot to prove before he is even held in the same breath as Williams.
This is what Chiefs fans do, and to an extent, it makes sense because things always seem to work out for them. However, there are objective truths in the NFL, and Josh Simmons being a comparison for Trent Williams is not one of them.
