According to sources cited by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the U.S. District Attorney’s office is looking into Beasley over allegations related to gambling on NBA games and prop bets.
This development comes at a sensitive time, with Beasley considered one of the top free agents on the market.
Beasley and the Pistons were deep in negotiations on a new three-year, $42 million deal to keep the free agent sharpshooter in Detroit, but discussions have now been put on hold.
“An investigation is not a charge,” Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, told ESPN. “Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the U.S. constitution. As of now he has not been charged with anything.”
The 28-year-old sharpshooter is coming off a strong season with the Pistons, where he averaged 16.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.
He shot 43.0% from the field and an impressive 41.6% from beyond the arc, ranking among the league’s top catch-and-shoot threats.
