Aston Villa are in talks about the terms of a permanent sale for a loan star
Aston Villa have a big summer ahead as they look to establish themselves as a major force within the Premier League. The club secured Europa League football with a sixth-place finish last time out and Unai Emery will be confident that his side have what it takes to go one further next campaign.
But that will not come without its hurdles. Villa teeter on the edge of a PSR breach and club officials fear that they may have no choice but to offload key assets this summer to avoid financial issues.
The fact this is still a problem for the Villains indicates the tight ship PSR dictates that Premier League clubs must run in order to get by punishment-free. The West Midlands outfit in fact made a profit in their transfer dealings in 2024/25, which included big-money sales of Jhon Duran, Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby, and a profit made on Jaden Philogene after just half a season with the club.
Villa’s position may become less strained if they are able to offload periphery members of the squad. Negotiations surrounding one such player are ongoing and the Villains hope soon to reach a conclusion.
Bundesliga loan star set for permanent move away
A £12.8m buy option was included in the deal for the 19-year-old but Leipzig are hoping to negotiate down this figure. Sky Sports Germany reporter Philipp Hinze has reported on X that RB are working on a solution to see if Villa would lower their asking price for Nedeljkovic or alter the terms of the deal. The German side hope to keep the right-back, who made 10 Bundesliga appearances during his loan spell.
Nedeljkovic signed for Villa in an £8m deal plus add-ons from Red Star Belgrade in January 2024, but only made 10 appearances for the club in all competitions before Emery evidently decided he was not part of his immediate plans and sanctioned a loan exit. Villa will hope to get as much money for him as they can if it can help them get out of a spot with PSR.
Nedeljkovic’s future lies away from Villa Park
After joining Leipzig on loan in January, Nedeljkovic said: “I’m very happy to be joining RB Leipzig. Since I first heard about the club, I really wanted to take this opportunity because they consistently focus on young players and give them the chance to develop. 2024 didn’t go well for me, so I’m eager to show what I can do here, get game time, and help the club achieve its goals.”
Emery echoed the sentiment of the young defender needing to take his next step elsewhere. “He [Nedeljkovic] knows that his next step in his career will be outside this team,” said Emery. “[He needs to] find his rhythm again at another club so that he can then reach his potential again.”
