NBA rumors: Sacramento Kings viewed as favorites to land veteran PG in NBA free agency

The Sacramento Kings have been linked in NBA rumors to a number of point guards this offseason. With the trade market heating up and NBA free agency imminent, it appears Sacramento has emerged as a heavy favorite for one of its top targets.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported that teams around the league believe the Kings have “the best chance” this summer to sign point guard Dennis Schroder away from the Detroit Pistons.

Dennis Schroder stats: 13.1 PPG, 5.4 APG, 2.6 RPG, 40.6% FG, 1.7 3PM per game, .073 Win Shares per 48 Minutes

Schröder, who turns 31 in September, was traded to Detroit in February by the Golden State Warriors. While he struggled in Golden State, the 6-foot-1 point guard averaged 18.4 points and 5.5 assists per game as a starter with the Brooklyn Nets (23 games) and posted a career-best 0.100 Win Shares per 48 Minutes with Detroit.

After trading De’Aaron Fox in February, Sacramento attempted to make things work with Malik Monk and Markelle Fultz as its top point guards. With a new general manager in place, Monk is now available for trade as the club seeks a true point guard.

With Detroit focused on other role players in NBA free agency, Sacramento might be the team most willing to offer Schröder a starting spot next season. He was also on the Dallas Mavericks’ radar, but they appear to be more focused on free-agent guard D’Angelo Russell.
