LA tried to trade for Mark Williams at the deadline, but the deal was nixed by a failed physical. They need a lob threat and rim protector to enhance Luka Doncic. Finding that player won’t be easy, but Pelinka must. The Lakers will explore every avenue this offseason.
The Lakers need to lock Finney-Smith into a long-term deal. He is friends with Luka from their days playing together in Dallas along with filling a key role in Los Angeles. The Lakers need defenders and shooters around their three stars. DFS is the perfect fit for that.
Lakers have work to do in adding a center
Nobody is giving the Lakers a center. The options in free agency at the franchise’s spending cap are not strong. They could add Clint Capela or Brook Lopez, but neither is a starting caliber option. Teams are playing hardball in trades given the Lakers’ needs. Finding the right deal won’t be easy.
LA should slow play things on the trade market. Pretend that you are willing to head into the season without the desired option and wait for the prices to decrease. Some team will have a logjam they’re desperate to solve before opening night.
It is the team’s obvious next move. The Lakers have several expiring contracts on their books available for trade. It is all about finding the right deal. LA should act fast in re-signing Finney-Smith and wait for the right trade for a starting center.
Expect the Lakers to sign Capela or Lopez. That gives them a quality backup at the five as they explore the trade market for a starter.
The Los Angeles Lakers have work to do. They must build a championship contender around Luka Doncic and LeBron James if they want their two superstars to stick with the franchise. Doncic is extension-eligible in August. He wants to win his first ring, and the Lakers need roster upgrades to make that a reality.
