Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal to acquire Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, and in this age of PSR, an agreed deal often means that a deal going the other way is also in the offing. In this case, that deal will likely involve Carney Chukwuemeka, who had already spent the second half of last season on loan in the Ruhr District.
However, according to the latest local reports, the Chukwuemeka deal is only going to be a season-long loan, with negotiations between the two teams said to be “nearing completion”.
Chukwuemeka failed to find favor under Enzo Maresca last season but did see his minutes tick up at Dortmund, making 16 appearances in all competitions, mostly off the bench after January. He’s remained a reserve player during the Club World Cup, but hopefully his involvement will increase should he stay with the team for next season as well.
The 21-year-old has three years left on his Chelsea contract, so next summer will likely see a more concerted effort to arrange a permanent transfer for him. The Blues spent £20m to get him from Aston Villa in 2022; Dortmund passed on their £40m buy-option last month.
