'What a player': Lewis Hall sends message to star who never wanted to leave Newcastle

Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall was among those to congratulate former star Elliot Anderson after England won the U21 European Championship.

Anderson didn’t want to leave Newcastle but was forced to go as the club looked to balance the books with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in mind.

The 22-year-old has since shone at Nottingham Forest and Anderson was brilliant as the England U21s beat Germany in the Euros final.

It was gutting to have seen the Newcastle academy graduate go. What makes it all the more frustrating is that Eddie Howe has already confirmed Newcastle will have to sell a player like Anderson again.

However, as painful as it is to see him develop elsewhere, it’s brilliant to see him build on his obvious talent. In fact, Lewis Hall was among those to congratulate him.

Lewis Hall sends three-word message to Elliot Anderson

On Sunday, Anderson again took to Instagram.

The Forest star posted a collage of images of England players celebrating their historic win and captioned the post: “A night we’ll never forget! What a team!”

Hall, who briefly played with the midfielder for Newcastle, responded with: “What a player.”

Tino Livramento was alongside Anderson as they won the trophy and responded with a love heart emoji.

What Elliot Anderson has said about leaving Newcastle United

Anderson may not have planned to leave St James’ Park, but the move to Forest has certainly worked out for him.

He made 33 Premier League starts during the 2024/25 campaign and established himself as one of the most highly rated young midfielders in the division as a result.

As loved as he was at Newcastle, it’s doubtful as to whether or not he’d have been able to do that on his native Tyneside, such is the competition for places in the Newcastle United squad.

Back in September, Anderson described leaving Newcastle as:“It was tough to make that move from your boyhood club.

“Ultimately, it was the club’s decision and it is exciting for me personally. It is a win-win for both.

“A lot of players experience this coming through their homegrown clubs.”
