Brace for Man United star as England Women thrash Jamaica in final Euro warm-up clash

Manchester United Women midfielder Ella Toone scored a brace as England beat Jamaica 7-0 at the King Power Stadium to round up preparation for the UEFA European Women’s Championship.

She was named the United Women’s Player of the Year and was one of three of the club’s stars named in England’s squad for the Euros – Maya Le Tessier and Grace Clinton being the others.

Toone flourished in this fixture to push for a place in the starting XI when England begin their title defence next weekend against France.

She opened the scoring in the 10th minute, curling a brilliant shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Liya Brooks, having received a pass from Georgia Stanway.

Jamaica could have cancelled Toone’s opener in the 19th minute when striker Kayla McKenna struck the ball into the net. However, the VAR ruled it out for offside.

On 32 minutes, Chelsea right-back Lucy Bronze doubled England’s advantage, powering a header into the far corner from Jess Carter’s cross.

2024/25 Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year Alessia Russo nearly added to the Lionesses’ tally but was denied by the woodwork before Toone scored again.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, the United midfielder pounced on a loose ball, curling a left-footed shot off the far post from the edge of the penalty area.

Brooks denied Toone a hat-trick before Stanway made it 4-0 just before the hour mark, blasting her effort into the net from 15 yards out.

The 25-year-old was replaced by Chelsea forward Lauren James in the 63rd minute.

James provided the assist when England scored for the fifth time in the game, sending a perfect cross to the far post, and Russo headed it into the net.

Chelsea star Aggie Beever-Jones netted the Lionesses’ sixth goal in the 85th minute, turning her club team-mate Niamh Charles’s low cross home.

Arsenal’s Beth Mead completed the rout before the final whistle, placing her shot into the roof of the net, aided by a deflection.
