Manchester United and England legend Paul Ince has been charged with drink driving.

The 57-year-old former midfielder, who also played for Inter Milan and Liverpool during his playing career, is said to have crashed his Range Rover into the central reservation near Neston, in Cheshire, on Saturday evening, June 28.

Police attended the scene and arrested the former England captain - and later charged him with drink driving. He will appear before Chester Magistrates' Court next month.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At around 5pm on Saturday, June 28, police were called following reports of a collision on Chester High Road, Neston.

"The incident involved a black Range Rover which had collided with the central reservation barrier. Officers attended the scene and arrested a 57-year-old man.

His glory days as a player were at United, where he bagged two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the League Cup under legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ince earned 53 caps for England, featuring in Euro 1996, the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. He made history as the first black skipper of the Three Lions.

A combative midfielder, he is perhaps best remembered for his gutsy performance in a goalless draw with Italy which sent Glenn Hoddle's side to the 1998 World Cup, when he suffered a head wound and battled on with a bandage and bloodied shirt, before his missed penalty in the subsequent shootout exit to Argentina.

Following his retirement, he ventured into management, leading teams such as Macclesfield, MK Dons, Blackburn Rovers, Notts County, Blackpool and Reading.

He parted ways with Reading in 2023 and has been unattached since then. Ince has also lent his expertise to media outlets like Sky Sports as a pundit, frequently discussing Premier League football, particularly his old club United.
