Welsh side Wrexham are set to sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward, according to the latest reports. The 32-year-old stopper began his career at the Red Dragons before being signed by Liverpool in 2012.

He had various loan spells at Morecambe, Aberdeen and Huddersfield, but made just three senior appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

In the summer of 2018, after Liverpool opted to break the then-transfer record for a goalkeeper to sign Alisson from Roma, Ward slipped to fourth choice and was sold to Leicester City for a fee in the region of £12.5m. With the Foxes, he made 52 appearances across all competitions, but departs this summer as a free agent after seven years at the King Power.

Now, the Daily Mail reports that Ward is set to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of a return to his hometown club. The Wales international is expected to become their second-choice goalkeeper behind Arthur Okonkwo, as they gear up for a step up into the Championship next season.

Wrexham have enjoyed remarkable success following the arrival of co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020. They made their long-awaited return to the Football League in 2023, before securing back-to-back promotions and stepping up to League One 12 months later.

Last season, they went one better, clinching promotion to the Championship with a second-place finish behind Birmingham City. It remains to be seen whether Phil Parkinson’s side can make it four promotions on the bounce, but Wrexham appear determined to make their mark in the second tier.

The report from the Mail also claims Ward may not be the only player with Liverpool links on Wrexham’s radar this summer. The article adds that 22-year-old left-back Owen Beck is a target for the club, having impressed on loan at Blackburn Rovers last term.
