Lonnie Walker IV’s path last season started with the Celtics then had him go overseas before landing with the 76ers. Now, he’ll be a free agent again after the Sixers declined his team option, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Walker was originally on an Exhibit 10 deal with the C’s during training camp last season. While he initially sounded like he could end up on the Maine Celtics in the G League, he chose to go the overseas route instead to Lithuania. Walker admitted he thought he was going to stay overseas, but the Sixers signed him for the rest of the season back in February right before the deadline.
Philadelphia declined Walker’s $2.9 million team option, who now heads to free agency. That will start around the NBA at 6 p.m. Monday as teams are allowed to negotiate with free agents starting then.
Walker averaged 12.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 20 game (seven starts) for the Sixers last season. It’ll be worth monitoring how his free agency market unfolds this summer.
He didn’t garner enough interest from the NBA last season, which is why he ended up on the Celtics throughout training camp. Walker, 26, has played 342 NBA games throughout his career but he hasn’t been able to stick with a team.
