Vitor Pereira calls on Nasser Djiga to learn from Wolves teammate

Doherty has been successfully converted into a right centre-back by Pereira and played a key role in Wolves' revival during the second half of the season.

The Irishman, now 33, finished the 2024-25 season with two goals and two assists in 35 matches in all competitions.

Djiga arrived from Serbian outfit Red Star Belgrade on a five-year deal earlier this year,  but has featured just 65 minutes across his five appearances for Wolves in the Premier League.

Pereira has praised Djiga's capacity to learn and feels he will benefit from watching how the current defensive unit work and operate.

"He's learning. He's a player that is a team worker and he needs to learn," Pereira said.

"He needs to look at what \[Matt\] Doherty is doing because they play in the same position.

"The three defenders that we are using now - and Santi also - they are doing well.

"To have a chance to put Nasser in the game is not easy and we have Santi. He is someone that needs to improve, but he's a worker, so we'll see."

The Burkina Faso international made his only start in Wolves' FA Cup fifth round defeat on penalties against AFC Bournemouth in March.

And when asked if there will be more opportunities for Djiga next season, Pereira has welcomed competition from the 22-year-old in the defensive area.

"We'll see if it's possible," he added.

"For me, football is a competition. We need competition inside the team.

"If me and you play in the same position and I'm playing better than you, the coach must decide. It doesn't mean you don't have quality, but you need to wait for your turn.
