£15m Newcastle flop could now join boyhood club next month – Report

Newcastle United must become better sellers, although there has been a crop of players signed during the Mike Ashley era that we’ve struggled to move on.

Isaac Hayden is still contracted to the club unless a settlement can be agreed, but Jamal Lewis will be departing in the coming days.

It’s been a dreadful five years for the Northern Ireland international, who signed in a £15m move from Norwich in 2020, but it looks like he’ll have offers come his way when he officially departs as a free agent next week.

According to Alan Nixon at The Sun, Luton Town are showing interest in Lewis as they prepare for life in League One after suffering back to back relegations.

Nixon reports that the Hatters are considering offering the 27-year-old a contract, with current wing-back Alfie Doughty facing an uncertain future.

Lewis was born in Luton and played for the club’s youth team between 2009 and 2013. He spent part of last season on loan at Brazilian side Sao Paulo, only to return earlier this year after picking up an injury, spoiling his hopes of landing a permanent move.

Having fallen victim to injuries, Steve Bruce and failing to fulfil his early potential, Lewis was a costly mistake for Newcastle, who will be glad to see his wages off the books after several years away from Eddie Howe’s first team plans.
