Newcastle United are yet to make a breakthrough in the summer transfer window.
Football financial expert Stefan Borson believes Newcastle United have an upper limit of £175million to spend this summer.
That would also include wages for potential targets as the Magpies aim to become key players in the transfer market. Recent windows have seen Newcastle take a back seat due to PSR restrictions.
As it stands, Toon chiefs are yet to make a breakthrough but are working on several deals. Anthony Elanga, James Trafford and Joao Pedro are understood to be top targets, although the latter is reportedly favouring a move to Chelsea.
Newcastle United ‘triple bid’
The Telegraph claimed last week that Newcastle launched a “triple bid” for the trio costing £125million. Approaches for Trafford and Elanga were snubbed but the Magpies remain keen on all three.
Burnley are holding out for closing to £40million with Trafford while Forest have slapped a £60million price tag on Elanga. Monetary guru Borson expects the numbers to edge closer to £175million once wages are considered - what he estimates is the club’s entire budget.
Financial expert on Newcastle United budget
“I think to get those three players is probably going to be near £150million, and then on top of that, you’ve got all of the consequential costs of a deal,” he told Football Insider. “You are looking at the best part of £175million to do all those three deals in terms of book value, agent costs and everything else that goes with it.
“It would be hard to think they’re going to do more than £175million. I don’t think the £125million plus the agent fee looks like that’s going to get them over the line on those deals. So, the question will be, have they got the £150million plus? It will be £175million because once you’ve got £150million of spend, it’s £175million on the books at least.
“Have they got £175million? I think a kind of total package of £175million of spending feels like the most that they can do without player sales.”

Darren Eales on PSR struggle
Toon CEO Darren Eales told reporters earlier this year that Newcastle are spending as much as they can within the PSR limit. He said: "If the rules weren't there we'd spend more. Because we are an ambitious ownership group that is looking to drive Newcastle to be sustainable and compete for trophies.
“Ultimately, we want to be winning the Premier League but we have to do it within the constraints of what we have. We are already committed to £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.”
