Thomas Partey will officially leave Arsenal following the expiration of his contract, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed. The Ghanaian midfielder exits the club today, June 30, as a free agent, bringing an end to a five-year stint in north London.
Romano first reported the development on social media platform X, revealing that Partey’s departure had been planned for over a week. “Thomas Partey leaves Arsenal today as planned since 10 days ago. His contract expires, Thomas will leave as free agent… and Christian Nørgaard will join the Gunners from Brentford,” Romano wrote.
Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 after the Gunners activated his £45 million release clause. Over the course of his Arsenal career, the 32-year-old made more than 150 appearances and was a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s evolving midfield.

Despite a strong 2024/25 season, featuring 52 appearances, four goals, and three assists, contract renewal talks broke down due to disagreements over wages and the length of the proposed deal. His exit follows that of Jorginho, who recently joined Flamengo, leaving Arsenal with a significant midfield reshuffle ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Partey’s final season at the Emirates marked a resurgence in form and fitness, as he played an integral role across both domestic and European competitions. Known for his composure, tactical intelligence, and leadership, the Ghana international was a stabilising force when fit, often dictating the tempo of play from deep midfield.

In response to the departures, Arsenal have moved swiftly to reinforce their squad. Brentford captain Christian Nørgaard is set to arrive for an initial £10 million fee, potentially rising to £15 million with add-ons. The Danish international is expected to bring defensive solidity and experience to Arteta’s midfield. Additionally, Arsenal have secured the services of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad as part of their broader summer overhaul.
Partey’s exit has sparked mixed reactions. While some fans have praised the club’s financial discipline, others question whether his absence could be keenly felt.
Although Partey leaves without major silverware, apart from the 2023 Community Shield, he departs with respect for his professionalism and influence.
