Former Aston Villa star on the move again less than six months after £70million exit

The Colombia international joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr in January for a fee which could eventually rise to more than £70million.

But he is now on the brink of switching to Fenerbahce, who are managed by Jose Mourinho, with a loan deal expected to be completed this week.

Duran, who joined Villa from Chicago Fire for £18m in January 2023, scored 13 goals during the first half of last season and at one stage overtook Ollie Watkins as Unai Emery’s first-choice striker.

But the relationship between the manager and player became increasingly strained and Villa decided to cash in when Al-Nassr approached during January, with the fee received helping to ease PSR concerns.

Duran has scored 12 goals in 18 matches in Saudi Arabia, where he is reported to earn in excess of £335,000-a-week.

His exit now is believed to be motivated in part by Al-Nassr’s desire to hand his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo a new, improved contract.

Duran was the second Villa player to move to the Saudi Pro League with Moussa Diaby having joined Al-Ittihad for £50m last summer.

The immediate focus for Villa in the current transfer window is again on outgoings as they seek to reduce their wage bill and comply with Uefa’s squad cost control rules.

Villa are believed to have been above the limit last season and will be fined as a result.
