Report: Newcastle United new training ground development update as PIF's 'soft timescale'…

Newcastle United are considering locations for a new training ground, and an estimated timescale for completion has now been revealed.

It comes as no surprise that a new training ground is in the pipeline on Tyneside. The existing site is far from adequate and needs major improvement to reach the same standard as other training complexes in the Premier League.

With that being said, Newcastle United’s training ground has undergone some maintenance since the takeover in 2021, and work is underway to expand the existing site to help the academy. Additionally, the facilities at Kingston Park, where Newcastle’s women’s team play, have been improved in recent months.

It has been reported that work at Newcastle’s Darsley Park will finish in summer 2026, ready for the 2026/27 season. That also coincides with when Newcastle are set to launch a new club badge after those changes were also revealed earlier in 2025.

Despite the renovations, Newcastle are eager to build a new training complex and have already looked at possible sites. Reports suggest that the Gosforth Racecourse is the leading contender for the work, but a site near Newcastle’s airport has also been considered.

Now, an update on the training ground plans has been shared, and it includes a rough estimate of when the work could be completed.

Newcastle United set soft deadline for their new training ground

Darsley Park has been the home of Newcastle for over 20 years now, but PIF believe it is time to move on and put the club into a state-of-the-art complex to help drive their project forward.

It is believed that Newcastle’s new training ground will cost around £200m, a fee that PIF are more than capable of affording. It has been confirmed that Newcastle have hired Populous to build their new training ground – they are recognised for building the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, and Real Madrid’s stunning training complex.

PIF are eager to get the work done, and according to The Athletic, Newcastle have placed a ‘soft timescale’ of three to five years to get the work done. That would see the new training ground completed by 2028 at the earliest. The report adds that Paul Mitchell, Newcastle’s departing sporting director, has visited possible sites around the city’s limits.

However, the 43-year-old’s focus has been on whether the men’s, women’s and academy teams can all be configured into one site, or if they will have to build separate complexes for them.

Newcastle United have one problem after new training ground update

The new training ground will be a breath of fresh air for staff, players and fans alike. The current training complex is not good enough for any Premier League team, let alone Newcastle.

Manager Eddie Howe has confirmed he has no part in Newcastle’s new training ground. He was very hands-on with Bournemouth’s training ground development when he was their manager in the 2010s, but has publicly confirmed that work will be left to others this time around.

While Newcastle’s soft timescale is a positive, and likely means that the new training ground is coming before the new stadium, there is no guarantee that it will be done in that timeframe.

The same Athletic report confirms that Newcastle have not yet obtained planning permission for any site, and it is unknown whether any planning permission has been put in place.

It could be a case that the new training complex ends up coinciding with the opening of a new stadium, but that remains to be seen.
