Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Oliver Gibson, who played four seasons with the team, has died at the age of 53.
Gibson was a fourth-round pick by the Steelers in the 1995 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He played four seasons with the team before leaving for the division rival Cincinnati Bengals in 1999.
He stayed with the Bengals until 2003 and finished his NFL career in 2004 after stints with the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Gibson was mostly a backup during his time with the Steelers before taking on a more prominent role with the Bengals. He played 60 games over four seasons with the Steelers, posting 5.5 sacks over that span.
With the Bengals, Gibson played 73 games with 57 starts from 1999 to 2002, amassing 12 sacks during his time with the team and becoming a key rotational piece r his time with the teamin 2003.
A Romeoville, Illinois, native, Gibson took on high school coaching after playing. He was the head football coach of his alma mater, Romeoville High School, and also helped out as an assistant basketball coach.
Former teammates poured tributes to Gibson, including former Bengals star wide receiver Chad Johnson and ex-Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz.
