Aston Villa are short on complying with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) after a club source’s reveal.

The West Midlands giants have faced PSR issues over the past couple of years after spending close to the allowable losses limit, with Premier League clubs only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman all moved on before last year’s accounting deadline to help them avoid a spending breach.

Football Insider revealed on 25 June Villa must make a £30million sale before their financial year ends on 30 June to comply with the PSR regulations.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the club are likely to sell their women’s team.

The Athletic reported on 25 June talks are advancing over the sale of Aston Villa Women.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to owners BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for 2023-24.

Villa posted a club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their turnover increased from £217.7million in 2022-23 to £275.7million, while their losses fell from £119.6million to £85.4million.

Aston Villa could breach PSR after press reports

Borson insisted the press reports are clear that Villa are “short” on PSR.

He told Football Insider: “Well, as far as I can tell, there’s not a single significant rumour about a player going.

“Now, we all know that the deals can happen out of the blue.

“I think it seems pretty clear from all of the press, and I think this is presumably guided by sources at Aston Villa, that they are short on PSR for this season, which is not a surprise.

“It’s something that I’ve been talking about really since last year that I thought they would have a challenge this year.

“I think they’ve got to do something.

“It looks most likely to be the women’s team.”

Aston Villa’s Matty Cash sale hits stumbling block

In terms of a potential exit, Football Insider revealed on 28 June Villa are willing to sell Matty Cash this summer despite him being a regular starter under Unai Emery.

However, a deal has been held up due to the right-back’s £100,000-a-week wages at Villa Park.

Villa have fielded enquiries for the 27-year-old from clubs in the Premier League and abroad in recent weeks.
