O’Brien, 26, has a year left on his contract at Nottingham Forest. He spent time on loan at Swansea City last season and made 16 appearances in all competitions.

In this latest update regarding his situation, journalist Nixon has reported on Patreon that the Red Dragons are willing to splash £5million on him. Hull City have also been mentioned as a potential suitor.

After landing him for Swansea City last winter, their former boss Luke Williams told their website: “Lewis brings a lot of experience and he is a really competitive guy. He is a player who understands the rigours of the Championship, he is very, very motivated and he has real quality.

“He can take the ball, is a good passer, he knows how to attack the box correctly and he will compete for every ball. The players we have are giving everything, but to bring in a player who is fresh and has great experience and a real competitive edge will give everyone a boost.”

He has been loaned out over the past few years to DC United, Middlesbrough, Los Angeles FC and Swansea City to get game time. His future at the City Ground is now up in the air amid attention from elsewhere.

O’Brien rose up through Huddersfield Town’s academy ranks and later broke into their first-team. He was also shipped out to Bradford City on a temporary basis to get some experience under his belt.

What now for Wrexham target Lewis O’Brien?

Wrexham will be eager to cause a splash in the second tier next term. They went up from League One along with Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic.

The Welsh outfit have ambitious plans to reach the Premier League down the line. They have money to spend and need to do their business wisely.

Securing O’Brien’s signature would be a statement of intent by Parkinson’s men if they were able to do it. He would inject more quality into their ranks and has bags of experience in the Football League.
