Jurgen Klopp is one of Liverpool’s all-time best managers. He has now admitted that he turned down the opportunity to manage the German national team in 2023.
Klopp had just come off a poor season with the Reds leading up to that opportunity. They were one game away from the historic chance to win a quadruple in 2021/22. But, 2022/23 proved to be a hard time for them. They once again finished 5th in the league and got knocked out of Europe.
The challenges and high demand of that season had taken a physical toll on the manager. He did admit he thought about the prospect of leaving Anfield in the summer of 2023. That is particularly after Germany expressed serious interest. But he stayed loyal to the Reds.
He chose not to walk away during the rebuild. It now turns out that had he accepted the offer, he would’ve taken charge of his home country’s national side. That was a job many had expected him to accept someday.
A Lasting Legacy at Anfield, Even After Goodbye
Klopp took charge of Liverpool in October 2015 stayed for eight and a half years. He returned the club to being a top European football power. He lifted the Champions league trophy. That ended a 30 year wait for the leagues title. Not only did he win the UCL, he won the Carabao cup, Club World Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Klopp left Liverpool in a far better strong position than most club legends leave their former clubs. He may not be on the touchline any more but will always be part of this red part of Merseyside.
