Eagles 2025 Training Camp Position Preview: Quarterback

Returning Starter

Jalen Hurts was marvelous in the 2024 playoffs, finishing with a 71.4 completion percentage, 108.6 passer rating, 10 total touchdowns against just one turnover, and an 8.0 yards per attempt on his way to Super Bowl LIX MVP honors. In the regular season, Hurts posted his highest career completion percentage (68.7) and passer rating (103.7). He had just five interceptions, the fewest since he became the full-time starter in 2021, and ranked fourth in the league with an average of 8.0 yards per attempt.

Hurts (6-1, 223 pounds) will turn just 27 in August. He's already been named to the Pro Bowl twice, selected to the All-Pro team, was runner-up for the NFL's MVP Award, started nine postseason games, won two conference titles, and captured a Super Bowl along with MVP honors. In fact, Hurts is just the seventh NFL quarterback with multiple conference titles and at least one Super Bowl victory in his first five seasons.

In the Mix

Tanner McKee (6-6, 231 pounds) has served as the No. 3 quarterback in his first two NFL seasons, but got on the field in the final two regular-season games this past season, making his first career start in the Week 18 win over the Giants. In that game, McKee threw for 269 and two touchdowns. In his NFL debut, McKee came in for an injured Kenny Pickett and tossed two touchdowns in four attempts as part of the NFC East-clinching 41-7 rout of the Cowboys. Following Pickett's trade to the Browns this offseason, the door is open for McKee to step up and assume the primary backup quarterback position this year.

New to the Nest

Before getting into the players, there will be a new face leading the quarterbacks this season. The Eagles hired Scot Loeffler (pronounced LEFF-ler) in the 2025 offseason after Doug Nussmeier left to join Kellen Moore's staff in New Orleans. Loeffler has nearly three decades of coaching experience in the college ranks. He comes to Philadelphia after six seasons as Bowling Green's head coach, where he guided the Falcons to consecutive bowl game appearances for the first time in almost a decade. This is not his first NFL stint, as he previously coached quarterbacks for the Detroit Lions in the 2008 season.

The Eagles acquired Dorian Thompson-Robinson (6-2, 203 pounds) this past offseason in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Thompson-Robinson was on the Eagles' radar in the 2023 NFL Draft as the former UCLA quarterback visited the NovaCare Complex during the pre-draft process. The Browns selected Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round and the Eagles chose Tanner McKee one round later. Thompson-Robinson has played in 15 games over his first two seasons with five starts, throwing for 880 yards and a touchdown in that span. The Eagles were intrigued with the player who finished his college career as one of the school's most productive quarterbacks, ranking first all time in completions (886), touchdown passes (88), total touchdowns (116), and total offense (12,536 yards).
