Drink driving charge for Manchester United legend

Manchester United’s focus heading into the new season remains firmly on Ruben Amorim’s rebuild, as the club continues to juggle summer transfer targets and outgoings.

The Red Devils are also monitoring the situation of players abroad, particularly with recent developments involving sell-on clauses that could bring in much-needed funds.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s cost-cutting policies continue to stir debate, with figures close to the club voicing concerns over their long-term impact.

As pre-season edges closer, Amorim’s squad selections and youth integration have also become hot talking points.

But away from Old Trafford, a former United player has made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Paul Ince, the ex-United and England midfielder, has been formally charged with drink-driving after an incident on Saturday evening involving a collision with a central reservation, as per the BBC.

According to Cheshire Police, the 57-year-old was arrested following the crash on Chester High Road in Neston, Wirral, which took place at around 17:00 BST.

The vehicle involved was a black Range Rover, which struck a barrier in the centre of the road.

A police spokesperson confirmed: “Officers were called following reports of a collision on Chester High Road, Neston.

“The incident involved a black Range Rover which had collided with the central reservation barrier.

“Officers attended the scene and arrested a 57-year-old man.”

Paul Ince, who also played for Liverpool, Inter Milan, West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers during his career, has been bailed and is scheduled to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on 18 July.

He made history in 1993 as the first black footballer to captain the England national team and earned 53 caps in total, representing his country at Euro 96 and the 1998 World Cup.

After retirement, Ince turned to management, with stints at clubs including Macclesfield, Blackburn Rovers, Notts County, and most recently, Reading, whom he left in 2023.

This latest incident is a far cry from his glory days at Old Trafford, where he played under Sir Alex Ferguson and was part of a dominant midfield unit during the early 1990s.

The court hearing next month is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the crash and subsequent arrest.
