Is this the year Jordan Davis finally takes a big step?
The 25-year-old former first-round pick is entering Year 4 of his NFL career in 2025. The Eagles already picked up his fifth-year option for 2026 at a cost of $13 million. But they’re going to need more out of Davis this season to make that look like a wise decision.
Even though Davis is the only Eagles player to start every game over the past two years, he has still been a part-time player. He played just 37% of the Eagles’ snaps in the regular season last year and that dipped to just 21% in the playoffs.
But if you ask defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Davis played better late in the Super Bowl season.
“Jordan last year, I would say the last seven or eight games including the playoffs, played very well down the stretch,” Fangio said. “I think that's carried over into this offseason and I anticipate it carrying over into the season. I think he's in the best shape that he's ever been in, which he kind of got into late in the season last year and he's carried it over, so I think he's going to do very well for us this year.”
After having just 1 sack in 17 regular season games last season, Davis had 2 sacks in 4 playoffs games. He had one sack in the NFC Championship Game and one in Super Bowl LIX.
Davis is a huge defensive tackle, known for his run-stuffing ability, who is three years into his NFL career and still refining his game as a pass rusher.
“He got better towards those last seven or eight games. He really did,” Fangio said. “You saw it in practice first. A lot of people think you don't need practice, you do need practice, and he showed it in practice first and then it carried over into the games. I think he realized that, felt it, felt good, and he's just carried it over all offseason.”
Ever since the Eagles drafted Davis with the No. 13 overall pick out of Georgia back in 2022, one of the biggest conversations around Davis has been his weight and conditioning level. That conversation is ongoing.
This offseason, the Eagles’ praised Davis’s commitment to his conditioning and Davis said he evolved in that respect during last season. That coincided with discovering his love for Peloton.
What led to the shift?
“Knowing that the team is relying on me,” Davis said. “Knowing that the team has a lot of trust in me and expects me to be there in the big moments. I feel like anytime I get a chance to be on the field, I should be at my best. That’s just something that I have to continue to keep doing and I have to be ready. I have to stay ready so I don’t have to get ready.”
