Newcastle have other irons in the fire after Joao Pedro deal collapses but July could be different

Newcastle United have already moved on from Joao Pedro after an ambitious £50m offer for the Brazilian fell short.
It may have been a failed move for the 23-year-old, but it showed Newcastle are ready to spend, with talks ongoing for Anthony Elanga and James Trafford. As Newcastle look to end three barren windows without a senior signing, the feeling at St James' Park this summer is that it is a case of when, not if.
Head coach Eddie Howe remains calm in the transfer window, but does not need to be reminded that Man City, Man United, Liverpool, and Chelsea have all made big strides forward as they look to strengthen their grip on being top five sides.
As reported by Chronicle Live this morning, Newcastle refused to get into a bidding war for Pedro but that does not mean they are about to sit back and relax.
James Trafford talks in progress but no breakthrough yet
There have been suggestions that Newcastle and Burnley are close to a deal for the England international squad player. However, as of Monday morning Toon chiefs insist that an agreement of a price is still not there.
The last bid lodged was £27m for Trafford with add ons but Burnley want more. Trafford is desperate for the move and has told those close to him he has his heart set on the deal.
But while personal terms won't be an issue, Burnley's demands have been high. One valuation put to United was £40m but Newcastle will stay patient to get the right deals.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin stance remains the same
In the aftermath of the England international's announcement he would be leaving Everton over the weekend, which also coincided with the collapse of the Pedro talks.
It resulted in immediate chatter on social media that Newcastle may well go back to a former target. Remember, Newcastle left the room last summer in talks with Everton for the ex-Sheffield United striker.
However, Newcastle have insisted that Calvert-Lewin is not currently on the shortlist. His next move could be a lucrative one according to sources on Merseyside with personal demands understood to be the issue on an extension at Everton.
James McAtee deal advancing - according to German sources
Whether the Man City forward ever fitted the exact type of profile, Eddie Howe is looking for is up for debate. But McAtee is a talented star that needs a big move.
The 22-year-old has a year left on his contract so Man City will be getting a fee. And now reports in the Bundesliga have credited both Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen with interest.
