Sacramento Kings rumors: Team may sign 2 veteran guards in NBA free agency

The Sacramento Kings are in the market for a point guard this summer after trading De’Aaron Fox in February. After exploring the trade market, it appears that Sacramento may double-dip in NBA free agency.

In their latest Substack, NBA insiders Jake Fischer and Marc Stein wrote that the Kings are poised to sign Dennis Schröder. Assuming that happens, Sacramento may also try to sign either Russell Westbrook or Malcolm Brogdon.

Schröder, who turns 32 in September, had received some interest from the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons. However, Detroit has turned its focus to a veteran wing in free agency, and Dallas is centering its attention on signing D’Angelo Russell.

Sacramento is expected to sign Schröder to a two-year deal believed to be in the “$30 million range,” according to Stein and Fischer. Even after officially landing him, the Kings’ front office is also weighing whether it’s worth adding Westbrook or Brogdon as the backup behind Schröder.

Brogdon, who turns 33 in December, spent last season with the Washington Wizards. He appeared in only 24 games, averaging 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per contest, with 0.061 Win Shares per 48 Minutes.

Even entering his age-37 season, Westbrook might be the safer option. He played in more games last season (75) than Brogdon did in the last two seasons combined (63). Signing two guards would be another indication that Sacramento intends to trade Malik Monk, who is generating significant trade interest this summer.
