Jonny Evans is officially hanging up his boots as he retires from the pitch, taking on a new role with Manchester United.
The veteran centre back has had an illustrious career, having come through the Manchester United academy in 2006, before going on loans with Royal Antwerp and Sunderland.
In 2015 Evans moved from Old Trafford on a permanent basis, heading to West Bromwich Albion for three years before joining Leicester.
Five years later, in 2023, Evans returned to Old Trafford, taking on the role of a back up defender to cover injuries.
Across his two stints with The Red Devils, Jonny Evans has made 241 appearances and even grabbed eight goals and seven assists from the centre-back role.
However, whilst his time on the pitch has come to an end, the 37-year-old isn’t leaving Old Trafford.
Manchester United have taken to their official site to confirm that Evans has been appointed as the new head of loans and pathways at the club.
In their statement, The Red Devils commented: “Evans, who is in the final stages of completing his UEFA A Licence, will lead on loans for United’s young players as well as work closely with director of football, Jason Wilcox, and the director of Academy to further enhance processes which maximise individual player development and prepare young talent to perform in the first team.”
It continued: “Evans’s transition into the role confirms the end of his illustrious playing career. Across his two stints at United, the Academy graduate made 241 appearances and won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups.”
Commenting about his new role and retiring from the game, Evans commented: “I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead.”
He continued: “I’ll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football.
“My biggest and most heartfelt thanks must go to the fans who have supported me during every step of the journey. It’s been an honour to be on the pitch and feel your passion home and away; I will be eternally grateful for every ounce of support.
“I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them to reach their potential. Having had experience of loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player’s development.
“I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.”
