Midfielder Christian Eriksen officially becomes a free agent today, as his contract at Manchester United expires.
He scored in his last appearance for United against Aston Villa in May, which he described as a ‘perfect finish’ to his stay at the club. He made 107 appearances and registered 25 goals.
The Denmark international could now move to Turkey to continue his career.
According to journalist Sebastien Vidal, Turkish giants Besiktas are pushing to sign the veteran midfielder, with talks ongoing between both parties.
Besiktas want to compete with Galatasaray and Fenerbahce at the top end of the Super Lig next season and would be boosted by adding Eriksen to their squad.
They are also close to sealing a deal for former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham from AS Roma.
Signing Eriksen would follow the club’s pattern of recruiting former Premier League players.
Besiktas have signed at least one former player of the English top flight in each of the last three summer transfer windows.
During that time, they permanently signed former West Ham United defender Arthur Masuaku and acquired Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gabriel Paulista, formerly of Liverpool and Arsenal.
A move to the Turkish top-flight, which is less physical and has a slower tempo than the Premier League, could benefit the 33-year-old midfielder.
Despite his limited game time, Eriksen can still influence games—only four United players registered more goal involvements than he did last season.
A move to Besiktas would help him be in good shape ahead of the start of Denmark’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games in September and ultimately help them qualify for the competition.
However, it remains to be seen whether the former United midfielder would prefer a move to the Turkish outfit, especially if he gets interest from the Eredivisie where he began his career .
