Defensive tackle Oliver Gibson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 1995 NFL Draft just before helping the team to an AFC title and Super Bowl appearance in his rookie season.
Over the weekend, Gibson passed away at the age of 53. Details of his death were not released.
Gibson played for the Steelers through the 1998 season before leaving for the rival Cincinnati Bengals in free agency, where he played for five more seasons.
Following the announcement of his death, former players took to social media to share their memories of Gibson, including Chad Johnson.
Gibson was a standout defender for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish before the Steelers took him with the No. 120 overall pick in 1995,
While in Pittsburgh, he tallied 42 total tackles with 27 solo with 5.5 sacks and one forced fumble across 60 games with no starts.
But his career flourished after signing with the Bengals, where he was a key factor in the Cincinnati defenses coordinated by Dick LeBeau, Mark Duffner and Leslie Frazier in the late 90s to early 00s.
Gibson registered 201 total tackles with 155 solo and 37 for loss with 12 sacks, two fumble recoveries, 10 passes defended and one interception before the Chicago, Illinois, native retired after short offseason stints with Tampa Bay and Buffalo.
