Deion Sanders Battling Bill Belichick for NFL Veteran’s Son’s Commitment

Regarding the 2026 recruiting class, the offseason has been relatively quiet for the Colorado and Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, landing a total of just four players for a group that ranks No. 100 in the nation.

However, they still have many intriguing players on their radar, including defensive lineman Joseph Peko out of Los Angeles, who took an official visit to Boulder on June 16.

Things are certainly moving in a positive direction as well, because on Sunday, Peko announced that he's deciding between Colorado and the North Carolina Tar Heels, the latter led by head coach Bill Belichick.

What makes these choices even more interesting is that he is also the son of the Buffaloes' defensive line coach, Domata Peko, who also enjoyed a 15-year NFL career spanning from 2006 to 2020.

That could certainly help them earn an edge over Belichick and the Tar Heels, but it's clear that Peko has some serious interest in North Carolina, as he took an official visit with the team on April 12.

No matter his choice, though, there's no doubt each program would love to land him, as On3 Industry Rankings place him as a three-star recruit, the No. 96 defensive lineman, and the No. 1,094 player in the nation.

Last season for Oaks Christian High School, Peko put up solid numbers, accumulating 38 tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, six hurries and one forced fumble in seven games.

Now, it remains to be seen if Sanders and Colorado or Belichick and North Carolina come out on top in this high-powered recruitment battle, as a commitment date has yet to be announced.
