Newcastle United were interested in Bryan Mbeumo earlier this window and Manchester United are struggling to make a breakthrough.
Manchester United have reportedly seen a £60million bid rejected for Brentford talisman Bryan Mbeumo.
As it stands, the Red Devils are the sole candidates in the race to sign the 25-year-old. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur cooled their interest after Mbeumo made it clear he prefers to join Man United.
That is despite Spurs appointing former Brentford boss Thomas Frank to replace Ange Postecoglou. There is no suggestion Newcastle or Tottenham are actively pursuing a fresh approach for the Cameroon international.
However, both clubs have watched on as Man United struggle to finalise a deal. The saga continues to rumble on more than a month after the Premier League season ended.
Man United bid rejected
It is understood the Red Devils wanted the move completed before pre-season training begins on July 7. Unless a drastic change takes place - which now appears unlikely - Mbeumo is expected to return to Brentford action on the same date.
The Manchester Evening News claim Old Trafford chiefs saw a £60million offer turned down over the weekend. Brentford are holding firm on their £65million demand, citing Matheus Cunha’s fee when he joined Man United last month.
Finances at Old Trafford
An extra £5million would usually not hold Man United up but finances are understandably tight. Failing to qualify for Europe next season dealt a blow to their summer preparations after years of mismanagement.
High earners like Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford still need shifting on. In truth, a deal is still likely to happen but Man United are not the dominant financial force they once were.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has infamously trimmed the non-playing staff since taking the reins last year. Mbeumo is set on the Red Devils but their next move in this pursuit will be telling.

Thomas Frank on Bryan Mbeumo
Speaking as Brentford manager, Frank insisted the club would demand a big fee for the winger. He said: "It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount. It is a lot. Really a lot. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one.
“It cannot be done. There is a reason why he costs x number of million pounds, and we do not have x number of million pounds to buy for.
"I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don’t look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer. How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player."
