Jonnu Smith is heading to Pittsburgh.
The former Patriots tight end has been included in a blockbuster deal between the Dolphins and Steelers. Miami is sending Smith, Jalen Ramsey and a seventh-round pick to Pittsburgh for Mikah Fitzpatrick and a fifth-rounder, according to NFL Network.
Smith will also get a one-year, $12 million extension, per Ian Rapoport.
A bust in New England, Jonnu Smith delivered an career year with the Dolphins last season, catching 88 passes for 884 yards. He also hauled in eight touchdown passes and was named to his first Pro Bowl. Given his production, Smith wanted to renegotiate his contract that will pay him $4.8 million in 2025, and Pittsburgh made it happen.
In Bill Belichick’s big-spending 2021 offseason, Smith was a high-profile free agent signing that didn’t live up to the hype in Foxborough.
The tight end inked a four-year, $50 million deal, but things didn’t materialize for him in New England’s offense, as Smith never hit 30 receptions nor 300 receiving yards in a season and only caught one touchdown pass. In the spring of 2023, Belichick traded him to Atlanta for a seventh-round pick after just two seasons.
