Illan Meslier’s future has been decided at Leeds United – alternative could be a ”major…

Leeds United are yet to sort out their goalkeeping situation from last season. Daniel Farke’s decision during the run-in set off a series of events.

Illan Meslier’s errors in goal were too much for Farke, who benched the Frenchman for Karl Darlow in the last seven games of the season. Leeds went on to win the Championship, with Darlow keeping four clean sheets. This sparked rumours of Meslier leaving the club this summer.

The atmosphere around Elland Road is that everyone expects Meslier to leave this summer.

The Athletic journalist Breren Cross has outlined the situation involving the French keeper. According to the report, it is now or never for Leeds to get rid of Meslier. With his contract running out next year, this summer window is the only time they can get a decent fee for him.

“Based on how last season finished and how big a chasm Leeds need to bridge to the top flight, a new contract for Meslier would be a major surprise.” Cross added.

Leeds are in a tough position

The Illan Meslier situation has become very uncomfortable. He clearly will not return to Daniel Farke’s plans for next season. And his contract makes a potential exit this summer very complicated. A lot of clubs might just decide to wait till January and sign him on a pre-contract.

Leeds could lose him for free, as it is unlikely he signs a new deal at Elland Road. Regardless of all this, the recruitment team have to move fast. A very good goalkeeper might be the difference between relegation and survival. Hopefully, Leeds can snap up a quality shot stopper.
