The Detroit Pistons anticipated a quiet offseason, but after the news emerged Sunday that [guard Malik Beasley is being investigated by the U.S. District Attorney’s office](https://www.mlive.com/pistons/2025/06/pistons-malik-beasley-subject-of-investigation-into-alleged-nba-gambling.html), plans may have changed.
Reports surfaced the Pistons were close to re-signing Beasley — set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason — on a three-year deal, but those talks have paused and Detroit may have a new target to fill the role.
The Pistons are “expected to focus on” bringing in Atlanta Hawks free agent shooting guard Caris LeVert, according to a report from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of [_The Stein Line_](https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-freshest-and-hottest-nba)_._
LeVert surged in the final 26 games of the 2024-2025 season after being traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Atlanta Hawks.
The former Michigan guard averaged 10.2 points on 45.3% shooting primarily off the bench with Cleveland before the trade. He improved to 14.9 points per game on 48.2% shooting with the Hawks. His three-point percentage took a steep drop, but he was much more productive after the change of scenery.
LeVert hits free agency and signs were pointing toward him re-signing with the Hawks. However, Atlanta is reportedly the frontrunner for shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
The Pistons have also been pursuing Alexander-Walker.
A potential sign-and-trade between the Hawks and the Minnesota Timberwolves could open the door for the Pistons to find their replacement for their key sixth man spot.
Over his nine seasons, LeVert is averaging 13.9 points, four assists and 3.8 rebounds on 43.7% shooting from the field and 34.5% from beyond the arc.
The Pistons would be LeVert’s third Central Division team following his stints with Cleveland and the Indiana Pacers.
Beasley’s return to the Pistons looked imminent before the reports emerged he allegedly took part in gambling on NBA games and prop bets during the 2023-2024 season.
While Beasley hasn’t been charged with anything yet, the NBA has cracked down heavily on player gambling. Last year, Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter was banned for life by the league after he was found to have disclosed “confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games.”
The Pistons won’t be able to sit and wait while the investigation — now ongoing for 18 months, according to Beasley’s lawyer — continues. So finding a veteran scorer like LeVert will be important if Detroit wants to keep their momentum from last season’s playoff appearance.
