Pittsburgh Steelers land big weapon with Arthur Smith ties in Jalen Ramsey trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers have traded for tight end Jonnu Smith as part of the blockbuster Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick trade.

The trade will involve Smith for a late-round pick swap, which includes the Steelers’ 2027 fifth-round pick and the Dolphins’ 2027 seventh-round pick. Smith will receive a one-year, $12 million extension as part of the deal.

The Steelers, who traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in May, now add another weapon to the group, where they already have Pat Freiermuth. That duo will become the crux of the Steelers’ offense.

Smith was a Pro Bowl selection in 2024 for the first time in his career. He set career-highs last year with 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in the Dolphins offense. All of those marks were franchise records.

Smith, 29, will turn 30 in August. He and Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith have many connections throughout history. In Tennessee, the player-coach duo worked together for four seasons from when Arthur Smith was a tight ends coach to when he took over as the team’s offensive coordinator. Jonnu joined Arthur in Atlanta for one season, too.

During those years, Jonnu Smith progressively became a more prominent part of the offense, putting up consecutive 400-yard seasons with Arthur Smith as the offensive coordinator.
