Ex-Newcastle Man Clark Declares Bankrupt
The 52-year-old could face more trouble if his debt remains unaddressed
Clark filed for bankruptcy earlier in June, but has insisted that he had no idea he was in such a compromising position. It has left him at risk of putting his multi-million-pound property on the market and has placed other valuable assets in limbo. Clark told the Mirror that he was unaware of any risks relating to his finances and explained how he came to be in the situation.
"I have no idea. I have no comment to make. I know nothing," the 52-year-old stated.
The bankruptcy is believed to be related to a debt owed to a business finance firm, and was filed with the London Gazette. A financial company named One Stop Business, located in York, initiated the petition. Consequently, the ex-midfielder’s entire asset portfolio will be placed under the oversight of the Insolvency Service.
If he fails to resolve his outstanding debts, his bank accounts, savings, and other significant possessions may be liquidated to satisfy his unsecured creditors.
Clark began his career at Newcastle and was part of Kevin Keegan's Newcastle side in the 1990s, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League in 1993. He made a high-profile £2.5m move to Sunderland in 1997, but left to join Fulham in 1999.
He would make a return to St James' Park in 2005, but would make just 22 Premier League appearances across two seasons in his second spell before retiring in 2007.
While he never appeared for the senior England side, he did make 11 appearances for the under-21s, and was called up to three senior friendlies but never came off the bench.
