Arsenal reopen talks for 2nd 27yo winger

Arsenal have reopened talks over the potential signing of Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, according to a report in Italy.

Alfredo Pedulla reports for Football Italia that Arsenal are turning back towards a potential move for Ademola Lookman, having made an initial approach to the player last August.

At the time, Atalanta were asking for €50m (£42.8m), and that reportedly remains the price for the winger today. Atalanta are looking for €45-50m plus add-ons this summer.

That would make Lookman one of the cheaper wingers Arsenal are pursuing, compared to the likes of Rodrygo and Eberechi Eze. Though given his age (27) and history in the Premier League (11 goals in 96 games), he’d still represent somewhat of a gamble.

Lookman has had perhaps the strongest spell of his career with Atalanta, most notably scoring a hat-trick against then-undefeated Bayer Leverkusen to win the Europa League final last May.

The winger has netted more goals with each successive campaign this decade, scoring four in 2020/21, eight in 2021/22, 15 in 2022/23, 17 in 2023/24, and 20 in 2024/25.

The Nigeria international also assisted seven goals last season, with seven of his 27 goal contributions coming in his seven appearances in the Champions League.

There’s no doubt that Lookman has developed a lot since his last spell in England in 2021/22, but the question remains whether he’s worth the £42m+ Arsenal would have to pay for him. That’s evidently what the Gunners are considering at the moment.

Over the weekend, it was reported that Arsenal had held talks with Eberechi Eze’s camp regarding a move.
