Hull City are set to welcome a new addition as players return to Cottingham for the start of pre-season training this week, with former Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool player Jonjo Shelvey expected to take part.
Shelvey, who recently left Burnley, is currently without a club. It's understood that he will be joining City to maintain his fitness and ensure he's in peak condition ahead of the new season.
The 33-year-old midfielder has been offered the chance to train with the Tigers to aid this process, and naturally, both parties will be evaluating each other over the coming days.
A seasoned professional, Shelvey had stints in Turkey with Çaykur Rizespor and Eyüpspor before returning to England at the start of the year, but only made four appearances for the Turf Moor club in the second half of the season on their journey to promotion back to the Premier League under Scott Parker.
Shelvey joined Newcastle in 2016 in a deal worth £12million. He became a mainstay in their side under Rafa Benitez, with his successor Steve Bruce also leaning on the experience of the midfielder as the Magpies looked to assert themselves as a Premier League outfit.
His playing time dwindled under Howe after the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes and the development of Sean Longstaff, and the England international joined Nottingham Forest in January 2023.
Howe initially said no when Shelvey asked to leave the club for Forest, wanting to keep him at the club. The moved turned sour for the midfielder, however.
Shelvey went on to make just eight appearances for Forest, before having spells at Turkish sides Caykur Rizespor and Eyupspor.
He joined Burnley in January on a six-month loan and told the club's website: "I've got a bit of a reputation for being lazy but it's time now to put that to bed, back myself and show these Burnley fans what I can do.
"If anything, I need to prove to myself that I've still got it. I'm coming in here with a point to prove to be honest with you.
"Even though I'm 32, I still feel like I have a lot left in me and the only way I can prove that that is by performing in training and performing on the pitch to earn myself longer years at a football club."
However, after just four appearances for the Clarets, and their promotion to the Premier League, he was released without the offer of a new contract.
Featuring stunning photography, reaction from players, staff and fans, and a fantastic double-sided poster, this must-have souvenir is the perfect way to re-live an unforgettable moment in Newcastle United’s history.
