Newcastle United swerve Psr trouble as June 30 transfer decision made at St James' Park

Thankfully, Newcastle have not been forced into any major sales ahead of today's PSR health check deadline

Newcastle United are not set for any June 30 fireworks - unlike last summer's difficult final day of the month at St James' Park.

Back then, Elliot Anderson was sold to Nottingham Forest for a record £35million fee, and Yankuba Minteh departed for Brighton & Hove Albion for £30m. It left Newcastle without their Academy starboy and the winger that head coach Eddie Howe was ready to hand a chance to in pre-season.

The reason? Because - as verified publicly by Paul Mitchell to fans at the STACK in November - without the sales, Newcastle would have been docked points in the Premier League.

Mitchell said himself last year: "I would like to say Darren, Eddie and the team in June, in what was a very difficult situation for the club, allowed us to have a platform where we don't have a points deduction."

This year, with Newcastle heading for a clean bill of health PSR-wise, there will be no such sales on what feels like a "fake deadline day". But nor will United be taking advantage of other clubs in PSR danger.

Aston Villa find themselves in a PSR hole and Burnley have problems. But Newcastle are in a much, much better place than this time last year and don't have to do anything drastic, like sell Alexander Isak or other top stars.

Only it looks like business will wind down today without departures or arrivals. That's a notable non-development in some ways at St James' Park.

Howe, who wanted "speed" with all Newcastle summer business, has yet to see a summer deal unfold. He before the end of the season that Newcastle could capitalise on PSR woe elsewhere but that hasn't happened either.

Howe said in May: "The PSR deadline plays a huge role for clubs - both those clubs with PSR issues and those without - because those without may potentially look to try to sign players," said Howe.

"They [the owners] will look to take advantage of other clubs, as clubs did to us last year, quite rightly.

"It's a really interesting dynamic and one that we're really aware of and that we'll try to use to our advantage if we can."

But Newcastle seemingly couldn't, and a big July now lies in wait on Gallowgate.
