ESPN's Adam Schefter Reveals 'The Problem' With McLaurin and Commanders

The Washington Commanders, since the 2024 arrival of GM Adam Peters, coach Dan Quinn and QB Jayden Daniels?

It's been a very sweet ride.

But this Terry McLaurin contract saga, the longer it goes, the more we shift a little nervously in our seats. Now, we think a deal will get done; the questions are about ...

1 - When?

And ...

2 - How much of the bridge will be burned in the process?

The Commanders are all in on 2025 and part of that is having "Scary Terry" as a key member of the offense as one of the league's top receivers. After McLaurin missed mandatory minicamp as he searches for a new deal, some aren't sure what the future holds for one of the franchise's most consistent players.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, in answering a fan question about McLaurin's contract, said he thinks the two sides are still a fair way away from a deal.

"They have a lot of work to do," Breer wrote. "I’d expect that work will pick up again when the league comes back from break in a few weeks. But it’s still not in a great place. So we’ll see what happens — there’s plenty of time to get something done."

Sure, there is time. But that doesn't ease the present pain, with ESPN's Adam Schefter offering up a rather empty update on Monday.

“There's no update on the Terry McLaurin situation,'' he said, "and that's the problem. They have not made any progress.”

Oh.

There are reports that Terry's new contract will be at least $30 million APY, putting him in the upper echelon of receivers in football.

No doubt McLaurin deserves it, but things haven't been going smoothly in this negotiation, and while things "aren't in a great place'' and while things are "a problem.'' there is time to sort something out.

And as heavy-handed as it sounds, Washington's Super Bowl hopes might rest on it.
