Two surprise players show up on Jazz's summer league roster

With the Summer League right around the corner, the Utah Jazz have officially announced their Summer League roster. While it comes as no surprise that their rookies and sophomores like Ace Bailey, Walter Clayton Jr., Cody Williams, Isaiah Collier, and Kyle Filipowski will play, two players are also on the roster that not many would have seen coming: Brice Sensabaugh and Jaden Springer.

The Salt Lake Tribune's Andy Larsen posted the Jazz's roster for the Salt Lake City Summer League where Sensabaugh and Springer were listed.

It's strange when teams have players with two NBA seasons under their belt participate in Summer League, much like it was when Walker Kessler was on the team last year. In Sensabaugh's case, it is surprising to see him because he took a legitimate leap during his sophomore season after there were so many questions about his NBA future.

After miring in inconsistency, Sensabaugh found his niche as a three-point sniper. At 21 years old, there's also plenty of room for him to grow. If he hadn't shown legitimate progress last season, then this would make a lot more sense, but it is odd that he's getting these reps when the outlook for his future in Utah is much brighter than it was at this time last year.

With Springer, it's only surprising in the sense that he has four NBA seasons under his belt, so with that resume, players like him don't typically play in Summer League. However, in his case, it's a little different compared to most.

He didn't exactly light the world on fire after the Jazz signed him late in the season. With his team-friendly contract, Springer probably is out to prove that Utah should keep him, or at the very least, should the team waive him, he deserves another shot to make it in the NBA.

That's not to say that any of this is a problem. If anything, it should make the Jazz's Summer League games all the more entertaining. They have a lot of talent going in this time around. This could also be a preview of what's to come when the 2025-26 season starts.

Sensabaugh will not play in Las Vegas

After Larsen revealed the Jazz's summer league roster, he also revealed that Sensabaugh likely won't be on the team in Las Vegas.

In particular, yes, Brice Sensabaugh is participating in his third season. Plan is, as I understand it, for him to do SLC summer league but not Vegas.

The conclusion to draw from this is that Utah will likely try to mix and match with their young wings. Sensabaugh will be competing for minutes with Ace Bailey and Cody Williams. Sensabaugh is the most proven of the three, but he arguably has the lowest ceiling.

Because the Jazz already have a good idea of what he can do on the floor, they want to see how he fits next to some of their young talent ahead of next season. When they go to Vegas, they will then get to see where their young wings are at.

While it is a surprise that Sensabaugh and Springer are participating in Summer League, this should make for quite a memorable experience for Jazz fans. At least when comparing them to previous Summer League rosters.
