Dub Hub: Mike Dunleavy Jr. targeting two-way players in free agency

In today’s Dub Hub:

As NBA free agency opens today, Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. made it clear what kind of players the franchise will be targeting this summer.

Speaking with The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami, Dunleavy emphasized the need for two-way contributors who complement the Warriors’ current core of Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.

Via The San Francisco Standard:

“The good thing is that there’s a myriad of players available — whether it’s the free-agent market or you can make trades and we can put offers out on guys,” Dunleavy said. “So we’ll target some players that we think would fit well. It’s like, you’ve gotta have that balance of being able to play with these guys offensively by making shots, being able to pass, and handle the ball, and read the game. And defensively, you’ve gotta be able to guard, be able to hold up.

Dunleavy was also clear about what the team wants to avoid: one-dimensional players who could potentially become liabilities on either end of the floor.

“We can’t bring in a guy that’s a great shooter but on the other end defensively can’t do anything. That’s a problem. So we’re trying to look for net-net guys that can make this team better.”

With limited financial flexibility and the resolution of Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency still looming, finding affordable, well-rounded players could be challenging. However, Dunleavy appears committed to a focused and disciplined approach this offseason—prioritizing two-way players who fit head coach Steve Kerr’s system without compromise.

What got Lacob’s attention on Wednesday was a guy the Warriors thought could step right in and perhaps help them get past the second round next postseason.

So who was it? I asked around after Dunleavy confirmed the attempt and that led me to the most-lauded Florida guard, Walter Clayton Jr., a dynamic scorer who won Final Four Most Outstanding Player earlier this year and ended up going 18th to Utah.

It doesn’t sound like the Warriors got too close to a deal, even as Clayton fell a little lower than expected.

2. Jonathan Kuminga (Restricted)

Potentially one of the biggest swing pieces of the offseason. Kuminga, a career Warrior to date, is an athlete with potential All-Star scoring chops. A team like Brooklyn could offer him somewhere north of $30 million annually and force the Warriors to match or let him walk for nothing, or he could be the piece Golden State uses in a sign and trade.

LeBron James picks up $52.6M option, monitoring Lakers’ moves | ESPN

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

Poole, Durant trades remind Dub Nation of difficulty of keeping a dynasty

Fast forward to June 2025, and here’s the cruel irony: both Poole and Durant—two essential pieces of that Warriors championship dynastic puzzle—are now trying to recreate that winning formula somewhere else. The basketball gods have a twisted sense of humor.
