Ineos will set new 2029 target for Man United after seeing rivals receive £40m boost

Ineos have set several long-term targets since taking charge of Manchester United from the Glazers.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has set out to help Manchester United reclaim the throne at the top of English football.

The British billionaire has already signed off on some major off-pitch improvements including a £50m Carrington renovation that is ready this summer, as well as the 100,000-seater stadium set to open in 2030.

CEO Omar Berrada has often spoken of United’s ‘Project 150’, with the Red Devils aiming to win the Premier League title by 2028 – the club’s 150th anniversary.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is aiming to win the Premier League title during his time at Old Trafford, and now a new target has emerged for the club.

Ineos will want Man United in 2029 Club World Cup

After losing the Europa League final to Tottenham, United will have no European football next season.

It does allow Amorim to focus solely on the Premier League, but missing out inflicted a huge financial blow while also limiting the trophies up for grabs next season.

Ineos expect Amorim to finish in the top six next season to secure a return to Europe, but looking further forward, the club owners will want United back in the most prestigious tournaments.

That not only includes the Champions League, but also the new format of the Club World Cup, which is holding its inaugural tournament this summer in the United States.

Despite the mixed success and popularity of the tournament, the Club World Cup has a £775m prize pool for the participating teams.

Chelsea and Manchester City are the two English clubs competing this summer having qualified through winning the Champions League in the past four years.

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea have already earned over £40m in prize money, while City are set to also surpass that mark when they face Al-Hilal in their last-16 clash.

While United’s finances are healthier than some suggested earlier this year, recruitment is still being limited by a strict budget this summer. Meanwhile, prize money from the Club World Cup has given both City and Chelsea plenty of financial flexibility to splash cash on new signings.

How Man United can qualify for next Club World Cup

Ineos will not want United to be missing out on such a lucrative prize pool when the World Cup next takes place in 2029.

In order to qualify, United will have to meet one of two criteria:

Win a continental title in one of the next four seasons (Champions League).

Through a high-ranking coefficient score from Uefa competitions.

The latest Uefa coefficient rankings place United 11th in Europe, with the Europa League run last season adding a significant amount of points to their score.

There are reports that the Club World Cup in 2029 could be held in the winter if hosted by Qatar, and there are also calls to cancel the tournament entirely after its mixed launch in the US this summer.

United will hope rivals are slowed by the Club World Cup with both Chelsea and City facing the Red Devils fairly early on in the 2025/26 campaign.
