NBA free agency is slated to open up on Monday, and there will be deals flying around left and right. There were plenty of contracts being handed out on Sunday, and the Pistons were looking to join.
Instead of that taking place, there was a massive wrench thrown in their plans. They were reportedly in talks with [guard Malik Beasley](https://detroitjockcity.com/pistons-fa-may-just-cost-himself-42-million-free-agency-01jyy71zg8gw) on a three-year, $42 million but that was halted. Beasley is being investigated by federal authorities on allegations of gambling related to NBA games and prop bets.
They are from the 2023-24 season when he was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks. In that campaign, he scored 11.3 points in 79 games. He came over to Detroit for the 2024-25 season and was a key member of that rotation. He knocked down 319 3-pointers and was on the verge of returning, but that is up in the air.
Pistons May Rely on Chaz Lanier More After Malik Beasley News
-------------------------------------------------------------
Considering he was a reliable perimeter shooter, rookie Chaz Lanier may be forced into a larger role as a rookie. He was drafted with the 37th overall pick by Detroit. Lanier is a knockdown shooter who can create his own shot when needed. In his collegiate career, he averaged 11.4 points and made 40% of his threes.
He made at least 39% of threes for three consecutive seasons, and Detroit will need that sharpshooter in the Motor City. In an article written by Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports, Lanier's pro comparison was Beasley.
[O'Connell wrote](https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/2025-nba-draft-scouting-report-chaz-lanier-g-tennessee-175149956.html), "Dynamic shooter who thrives launching off movement actions like screens and handoffs. He has deep range, smooth mechanics, and a lightning-quick release. He hits tough, contested jumpers from both midrange and from 3, whether he’s using pick-and-rolls or attacking closeouts," in his NBA draft scouting report regarding Lanier.
The Pistons snagged him early in the second round for a reason, and that investment may quickly be put to the test.
